| V10 The V10 TDI® engine does not only have a very special status in the Volkswagen engine range. At its world premiere in 2002, this engine, with an output of 230 kW (313 hp) at 3,750 rpm was the world’s most powerful production diesel engine for passenger cars. No other engine was able to provide a maximum torque of 750 Nm at just 2,000 rpm. This compact five-litre ten-cylinder engine with two cylinder banks, which have completely separate intake and exhaust sides, is equipped with high-performance fuel injection technology on the basis of the pump-injector principle and is charged by twin turbochargers with electrically variable turbine geometry. The compact engine length of 544 millimetres is due to the intelligent arrangement of the alternator and coolant pump between the cylinder banks. The camshafts and auxiliary units (e.g. alternator, air conditioning compressor) are driven by maintenance-free gearwheels. A balancing shaft ensures comfortable and vibration-free engine running. A further special feature is that the crankcase and cylinder heads are made of aluminium. The V10 TDI® is exclusively available in the Phaeton and the Touareg. |
