In 1937, the “Gesellschaft zur Vorbereitung des Deutschen Volkswagens mbH” is founded, and one year later, it is renamed “Volkswagenwerk GmbH” (Volkswagen Factory Ltd.). At the same time, in 1938, construction of the Volkswagen plant got underway in today’s Wolfsburg; here, the vehicle designed by Ferdinand Porsche is to be built. I am sure all of you have seen and know this very unique “Volkswagen Beetle” car.

After the end of the Second World War, in 1945, mass production of the Volkswagen Beetle was started.

1955-72

Volkswagen’s production grew steadily, and in 1955 Volkswagen celebrates the 1,000,000th Volkswagen Beetle.

1972 was a major milestone for us. Volkswagen broke the world car production record: with the 15,007,034th Beetle rolling out of our assembly line, surpassing the legendary mark achieved by the Ford Motor Company's “Tin Lizzy”, also known as the Model T.
