A brief journey through a long history.
Volkswagen, Europe's largest carmaker today, was founded in 1937. The history of the company – with all its trials and attributions – is, first and foremost, a story of impressive success. The Volkswagenwerk plant established early 1938, housed the production of the new vehicle "Volkswagen Beetle", designed by Ferdinand Porsche.
Volkswagen’s production grew steadily ever since. In 1955, Volkswagen employees and dealers from Germany and abroad celebrated the production of the 1,000,000th (one million) Volkswagen Beetle in Wolfsburg.
In 1972, Volkswagen broke the world car production record: with the 15,007,034th Beetle rolling out of the assembly line, surpassing the legendary mark achieved by the Ford Motor Company's “Tin Lizzy”, also known as the Model T.
In 1973 a new generation of Volkswagen vehicles came to light: with front-wheel drive, and a range of engines up to 110 BHP water-cooled four-cylinder engines: The Passat. The Passat was built in line with the modular strategy, by which standardized components usable in a range of different models provide significant rationalization.
In 1974, the first Golf was built at the Wolfsburg plant. This compact car quickly became a hit, and advanced to become the legitimate heir to the legendary Beetle.
In 1976, the first Golf GTI rolled off the production line. The car, with its 110 BHP engine, took driving experience to a whole new level, and thus became the founder of the GTI legend.
The Volkswagen Legacy Car Touareg was introduced in August 2002. The multi-talented and versatile vehicle with super on-and-off road ability has marked Volkswagen brand's move into an entirely new market segment.
Today, the whole Volkswagen Group proudly operates 45 manufacturing facilities in 18 countries worldwide. An impressive workforce that exceeds 336,000 people around the globe, produce over 21,500 vehicles per working day. Volkswagen Group models are sold in more than 150 countries.
For Volkswagen it is a goal to deliver design innovation, precision engineering and superior technology, and above all, to ensure a state-of-the-art quality experience. Acknowledging that the markets are changing significantly, existing and new model strategy is continuously updated to maintain the loyalty that Volkswagen brand enjoys today. Volkswagen has and will continue to offer attractive, safe and environmentally friendly cars, which are competitive on increasingly tough markets.
